Girls Youth Rugby

Girls up to U12 train and play under the minis umbrella. Click here for more information.

We currently have more than 100 female players and although numbers are increasing, the HKRU combines girls’ age groups (U13/U14s and U15/U16s up to U19s) to enable each club and age group to field competitive teams and foster a sense of camaraderie.

The first part of the season until January is 15 a-side leagues with weekly matches on Sundays. In January teams switch to 10s in U13 and 7s in the other age groups.

Teams have regular training on Sundays until the league starts.

One special element of the girls' season is the All Girls International Rugby 7s Tournament, which is hosted by the Sai Kung Stingrays, and for many years was the largest girls rugby tournament in the world.

Girls Rugby FAQs

What does a player need to wear to rugby?

All registered players will be given a Kowloon Barbarians match shirt, and Stingrays shorts and socks, as well as a Stingrays training top. In addition, they will be required to wear studded rugby boots and a fitted mouthguard. No mouthguard – no play. Jewellery and watches are forbidden during play.

Where do we buy mouthguards?

Many HK sports shops (eg Escapade, Marathon Sports) sell mouthguards, which can be easily moulded and fitted at home. If you wish your child to have a more precisely fitted mouthguard, please consult your dentist. Mouthguards are also sold at King's Park.

Weather

King's Park is an artificial pitch and stays open in rainy weather. The pitch is usually open during amber rain and only closes for red and black rain or T8s. In the event of training or a game being cancelled Team Managers will contact teams through their regular messaging channels.

Whatsapp

Many teams also have Whatsapp to coordinate messaging with players and parents. As players become older, player only Whatsapps are created to allow players to communicate directly with each other, coaches and Team Managers. The aim is to have players develop as independent athletes and organise themselves through the Whatsapp groups, as well as develop team camaraderie.

Team Managers

Each age group has at least one team manager, but often more than one representing each club's players. Team managers are your first point of call when joining the club and help run messaging and sign ups on behalf of the coaches. All general enquiries should be directed to the team managers.

The very first ‘Sai Kung Stingrays All Girls Rugby Tournament’ was held back in 2006, when 130 girls braved the rain to play 66 games in the inaugural event.

Now in its 16th year, the tournament has not only strengthened domestic female rugby but has also had international interest with teams participating
from Guam, Laos, Japan, Australia and Singapore.

The 2019 event saw over 85 teams participate from both minis and youth age groups. Girls came together to take part in what is now the biggest all girls rugby tournament in the world. Then Covid halted all rugby.

Our return in 2023 was a local event, with still over 200 girls participating. We had Guam join us in 2024 and 2025 saw the tournament grow again with players and teams from Guam, Myanmar and Thailand.
